A rare late Victorian to early Edwardian regulation Royal Navy bi-corn hat with original blackened tin transit case. Made by Moore, Scantlebury & Coote. Located at The Hard, Portsmouth, they also had premises on 47 Conduit Road, London.
Bicorn hats were worn by high ranking naval officers from the 1790s onwards,and this one is a particular fine example with its plush exterior, antique gold bullion braid and trim, as well as fine silk lining. An excellent piece of British naval history and Australian/New Zealand colonial history.
Price marked at $2000 AUD.
Measurements: 43cm across (from tip to tip), 17.5 exterior diameter, 17cm height. 6 3/4 hat size.
Silk lining of hat detached but intact, otherwise excellent antique condition with minor wear overall commensurate with age. Wear and minor dents to tin as pictured.
