A rare late Victorian to early Edwardian regulation Royal Navy bi-corn hat with original blackened tin transit case. Made by Moore, Scantlebury & Coote. Located at The Hard, Portsmouth, they also had premises on 47 Conduit Road, London.
Bicorn hats were worn by high ranking naval officers from the 1790s onwards, and this one is a particular fine example with its plush exterior, antique gold bullion braid and trim, as well as fine silk lining. An excellent piece of British naval history and Australian/New Zealand colonial history.
Price marked at $2000 AUD.
Measurements: 43cm across (from tip to tip), 17.5 exterior diameter, 17cm height. 6 3/4 hat size.
Silk lining of hat detached but intact, otherwise excellent antique condition with minor wear overall commensurate with age. Wear and minor dents to tin as pictured.
