19th century High Victorian sterling silver and cairngorm amethyst snuff mull

A beautiful 19th century High Victorian sterling silver and cairngorm amethyst snuff mull, with body of pressed horn.

This snuff mull features a large foil-backed amethyst which displays a spectrum of colour from an amethyst hued centre to a smoky yellow-brown, which in modern terms is often described as “Ametrine”.

The sterling silver cap and lid is well-wrought with repousse motifs; unmarked which is typical of small fine items of the Victorian period, but tests as sterling silver. The shield cartouche to front of the snuff mull is blank.
