Viennese Cold Painted Erotic Bronze of Man and Female Musician on Carpet, Moorish in Style. Circa 1910. Attributed to Franz Bergman.

This exquisite antique bronze was produced in Vienna circa 1910. Although unsigned, the quality is exceptional and we are confident upon extensive research to state this is likely by the noted Viennese foundry of Franz Bergmann. His erotic bronzes often featured female odalisques in a Moorish, figurative Oriental style which was all the rage. His foundry was also known for its exquisitely painted bronzes, particularly the painted carpet styles. His erotic pieces were either unsigned or stamped with his pseudonym.
During its heyday Vienna had some of the greatest craftsmen in the world. Orientalism had inspired European artists since the 17th century, but the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair sparked a fresh craze in continental Europe for Egyptian and Moroccan art. Islamic-inspired art and bronzes were produced by Vienna’s greatest sculptors including Bergman and Chotka; this early 20th century bronze would be one of them.
Signed pieces, particularly the erotic bronzes, are highly valued and can sell for upwards of $10,000 at auction. This particular piece presents an excellent chance for collectors. A rare style, one that we have not come across before.

Price marked at AUD$2600.
