This rare Japanese Kinkozan V / Sobei VII ((1868-1927)) vase was handpainted in a highly unusual style for Kinkozan pottery.
For 5 generations, the Kinkozan family was recognised by the ruling classes of Japan as potters of surpassing skill. In the 1900s to 1920s, the successor to the Kinkozan name broke away from the stylised formality of past traditions. As such, a limited number of his works experimented with what was then groundbreaking new styles in Europe, such as the Jugendstil, Art Nouveau or Art Deco styles that were in vogue.
This is therefore one of the rarer styles of Kinkozan pottery to be found.
