Today we have a lovely antique sterling silver travelling spirit burner. The workmanship is superb, as the hinged lid opens to reveal a brass fitted interior. The brass compartment, which is inscribed “E.P. Paris”would be used to contain spirits, the flame of which would heat ladies’ hair curling irons, while two hinged supports would be used to rest the irons when not in use.
The exterior is stunning, with Egyptian Revival decorations with an Art Nouveau flair which was extremely fashionable at the turn of the century. The winged sphinx and cornucopia-esque flourishes are particularly well done.
Maker’s mark for N.A., London, 1905. Maker’s marks are rubbed but still legible, and assay marks are crisp and clear.

Measurements: 6 by 11 base measurements, 4cm high.
Condition: Excellent exterior condition, light wear to base which was possibly gilt-washed but is now shows silver. Inside shows light wear and curling iron is missing. These were frequently sold separate to the spirit burners so in our opinion does not distract.
