This late Joseon period vase, likely between the late 18th to early 19th century, is a rare piece to behold. Its restrained bottle-form silhouette speaks to the resurgence of neo-Confucianism among the literati in Joseon society. The white ware and cobalt glaze decoration was and remains a highly desirable combination from the period, as indeed it was for most of the Jose period.
This particular vase was bought in Seoul in 1979. The vase neck has been painted over; upon close examination we believe that an older professional restoration may have been made to the neck sometime in the 1960s to 1970s.
What makes this piece particularly desirable, even with a repair, is its paper labels indicating that it has been appraised and authenticated by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea (문화재청). Pieces like this are extremely rare even within Korea; the CHA no longer conducts appraisals nowadays unless for pieces of significant cultural value. Moreover, pieces with this designation are no longer exported outside of Korea.
Bottle form vases are highly desirable; we have seen estimates of up to 40,000 USD at auction, with unadorned Joseon white porcelain pieces usually priced between 4,000 to 6,000USD.
With provenance, documentation and condition in mind, we have priced this fairly at AUD$4,600.
