A lovely Edwardian cased set of 6 knives from Mappin & Webb. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but when two of those words are Mappin & Webb, they form a story in and of themselves.
Sheffield steel is among the best in England, and of course Mappin & Webb’s quality meant that they were the silversmiths of choice for royalty. Their patrons included the British throne, Russian Imperial Household and multiple Indian Maharajas (one of whom ordered a bedroom suite, including a solid silver four poster bed, to be made and shipped to his palace). Other patrons included Charles Dickens, Winston Churchill, Grace Kelly and more. Churchill in particular was fond of the solid gold ashtrays, which no doubt served good stead for his cigars.
This would make a fantastic present for any fine dining aficionado or bon vivant.
