The Meiji period is noted in Japan to be a period of modernisation and social upheaval, similar to socio-industrial trends occurring in England during the overlapping Victorian Era.

It was due to these domestic changes that the hitherto reclusive Chrysanthemum Kingdom opened up to the West, ushering in a whole new movement of naturalism and beauty. Japanese silver was some of the highest purity in the world, with silversmiths generally coming from the samurai class. The almost deification of art in Japanese culture meant that such work was incredibly rarefied. During the Meiji period, Japanese silver and craftsmen were incredibly in demand from then retailers such as Cartier, Tiffany, Arthur & Bond etc.

The high end nature of this piece can be seen in its specific depiction of a Japanese summer. Champlevé is a cousin to cloisonne but of an even more painstaking nature. This Japanese kōro or censer from the Meiji era (1868–1912) is of unusual size and fineness, with an elephant motif rather than the usual dragon or foo dog finial.

The bronze is a beautiful rich patina, finely chiselled with Japanese motifs, and a central band worked in polychrome champlevé (a few gaps and bubbles) with floral motifs and traditional colours.

The lid features a lovely openwork pierced design, with a pattern suggestive of traditional cloud motifs. With a classic square body and quad-footed base, this is a timelessly stunning and highly collectible piece. .

Price marked at $1800 AUD.
Measurements: Approx 18.5cm high, 14cm side measurements including handles.
Excellent antique condition, light wear overall commensurate with age.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0556/5693/9618/files/IMG_5343_71bcf6cf-c9ab-4216-96c4-8aafe5043be5.jpg?v=1688608990
mid-to-late-19th-century-meiji-period-imari-charger
Mid to Late 19th century Meiji period Imari Charger

This mid to late 19th century, late Meiji Period Imari plate is beautifully rendered in a sunset palette of cobalt blue, mandarin orange and a traditional red glaze signature of Imari-ware.
The motifs on this plate are reminiscent of the era in which it was created; traditional depictions of mandarin oranges, bamboo leaves, calligraphic and geometric patterns reminiscent of the Aesthetic Movement that was then trending in Europe.
